RUSSIAN POKER ACE WINS INAUGURAL WPT VIENNA
2011-03-30

Euro 447,850 payday is Gromov's best yet
The inaugural World Poker Tour Vienna wound up this week with an exciting five-hand heads up that saw Moscow poker ace Dmitry Gromov claim his biggest win yet, taking home the main prize of Euro 447 850.
Gromov pretty much dominated the competition, holding the chiplead for most of the action before facing off against a final table comprising Maxim Kolosov, Simon Ravnsbaek, Mario Adinolfi, Valentin Stroiescu, Maximilian Noll, Alessio Isaia and Mark Jenisch.
His hold over the game was illustrated by the fact that he personally took out over half the final table before ending in a heads up against fellow Russian Maxim Kolosov, whom he vanquished in only five hands.
Kolosov's consolation was a second placing purse of $241 180.

A GOOD MONTH'S POKER FOR BUKARA
2010-08-23

Bosnian player takes down Cyprus High Roller Freezeout
Bosnian poker pro Perica Bukara, who is now based in Germany, is enjoying a profitable August, having just taken down the $373 207 main prize in the $25 000 buy-in Full Tilt Poker Cyprus Classic High Roller Freeze-Out event.
It was Bukara's biggest win to date, but not his first this month; on August 6 he scored $37 000 for a 6th placing in the Unibet Open main event, and on August 11 another $20 000 in the Pokerstars EPT Estonia where he achieved a 14th placing.
In the three day High Roller event, Bukara faced some tough opposition after the original field of 36 entrants had been distilled to a final table of nine comprising Carter Phillips, Ziv Caspi, John Dolan, Sam Trickett, Jon Turner, David Benyamine, Andrew Feldman and Ori Miller.
The competition was intense, with the final tablers all fighting to make the top five positions, where the money started.
Down to three-handed action it was Bukara, Miller and Feldman who battled it out for four hours until Feldman was bundled out by Miller, leaving the heads up to Miller and Bukara, with the latter holding the chip lead. That didn't last long as Miller took it and held the advantage for most of the heads up.
It wasn't enough, however; Bukara kept up a determined assault on the chip leader, and with some fortunate cards managed to take control of the game and ultimately prevail.
Miller's talent and style were rewarded with a second placing check for $207 337.
Still in Cyprus, the Full Tilt Poker Merit Cyprus Classic Main Event kicked off this week, with Day 1a and 1b entries of 180 players, each ponying up the buy-in of $5,000 + $400 for 20,000 in tournament chips, with a re-buy or add-on facility available at any stage of the first five levels for an additional 20,000 in tournament chips.
Day 1b ended Saturday with 60 survivors, who will be combined with the 80 still standing from Day 1a when the action resumes Sunday.
The overall chip leader is Day 1a chipleader, EPT Monte Carlo Grand Final Champion Nicolas Chouity with 119,600. Good finishers from Day 1b included WSOP 2010 final tabler John Nolan on 95 400 and Internet whiz Sorel Mizzi on 90 225.

BERLIN POKER ROBBERS GO TO JAIL (Update)
2010-07-02

But most of the wages of sin remain unrecovered…
A German criminal court sent four men aged under 21 to jail Thursday for perpetrating a daylight raid on a million-euro poker tournament in Berlin earlier this year (see previous InfoPowa reports).
Sky News reports that, armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles, grenades and machetes the gang burst into the city's Grand Hyatt Hotel in March and escaped with around Euro 242,000.
Just weeks after the robbery, all four suspects were arrested, and have now been convicted of robbery and bodily harm.
Recapping the story, the television news channel noted that seven people were hurt in the heist and the robbers lost a large part of their intended takings in a scuffle during their chaotic escape attempts.
The 21-year-old ringleader was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison, whilst his accomplices, aged 19 to 20, were each sentenced to three-and-a-half-year terms in juvenile detention.
All four were treated with leniency after they confessed to the crime, but only GBP3,500 has so far been recovered, with the gang refusing to say where the rest of the money is.

SOUTH CAROLINA TO APPEAL POKER DECISION (Update)
2009-12-31

Attorney General refuses to accept that poker is a game of skill

The Attorney General of South Carolina, Henry McMaster, has launched an appeal against a circuit court decision overturning a conviction of five poker players earlier this year for illegal gambling.

McMaster's appeal was lodged with the state Supreme Court this week after Circuit Court Judge Markley Dennis ruled that poker was a game of skill, and therefore playing the game was not an offence.

"Our obvious reason that 'chance' need not be determined with respect to a particular game for purpose of the gambling statute is that the legislature sought to ban all 'gaming' for stakes at designated locations," the appeal filing claims, reports The Charleston Post and Courier.

Judge Dennis additionally criticised South Carolina gambling laws as "unconstitutionally vague and over-broad."
